     By Jewish custom, at age twelve a child becomes an adult.  At the end of His twelfth year, a Hebrew boy is expected to attend the sacred feasts and holy day services.  So in the year of His twelfth birthday, Jesus joined His parents in their yearly trip to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover feast.

     All men of Israel were expected to attend three yearly feasts in Jerusalem ~ Passover, Pentecost, and the feast of Tabernacles.  From all areas of Palestine, large crowds headed to Jerusalem.  The journey from Nazareth in Galilee took several days.  Large groups traveled together for safety and the chance to socialize.  Women and older men rode oxen or donkeys over the steep, rocky roads.  Stronger men and young adults like Jesus walked.
