Few people had any faith or hope for a future life.  To the vast majority, death was a mystery of uncertainty and gloom.  They longed for Someone to explain it, to give them hope.  Teachers rose up like stars in a night sky as their words gave hope to thousands in the Gentile world.  The hope of the coming Messiah was understood and shared by many Gentiles.

These Gentile people had a better understanding of the Scripture’s prophecies concerning the Messiah than did the Jewish priests.  Many were eager to learn more from the traditions and rituals of God’s people.  But in their prejudice, the Jews were more concerned with keeping the walls of separation in place.

A new Teacher, a true Teacher, would have to come and explain it all.
