If Israel had only followed God faithfully, He would have made them the most honored, the most admired nation in the world.  Due to their stubborn unfaithfulness, His plans had to be worked out through hardship and suffering.  Eventually the nation was conquered by Babylon and the people were scattered through many lands.

In this time of trouble, many of them began to follow God again.  The light of truth shone out from them.  Knowledge about HIm began to spread.  Many sincere followers from the other nations learned of the true God and had faith in the promised Savior.
